When does the next course start?
The first week of Philosophy Works this Autumn in New York City will be from Monday September 22nd to Saturday September 27th. Each week's session is repeated every day from Monday to Saturday, so if you wish you can vary the day of your attendance each week. Sessions begin at 7 pm, from Monday to Friday, and at 10 am on Saturday mornings. They last about two and a half hours, including a break for refreshments. Check the Locations/Register page for details on other locations.
What does the course cover?
The course has plenty in it for anyone interested in the world in which we live. Concepts considered include elements from some of the great philosophic teachings and religions of the world such as Socrates, Plato, Emerson, Confucius, Shakespeare, the Bible, the Upanishads, Buddha and Shantananda Saraswati, a modern exponent of the philosophy of unity. A simple exercise in awareness is introduced in the first week.
What is the format of the classes?
An instructor presents material, and facilitates discussion based on what arises. Students are encouraged neither to accept nor reject the ideas put forward, but to test these ideas in their own life, in the light of their own experience.
Who are the instructors?
Following the principle of learn and teach, instructors are appointed on the basis of having a firm understanding of the philosophic principles. They have attended the School for a number of years and demonstrated an appreciation of the practice of philosophy in their daily lives. All instructors remain students as well since the learning process never ends. No remuneration is received for tutoring in the School.
What do I need to bring with me?
Just an open and inquiring mind. At the end of each evening a handout with key points and quotations is provided.
Do I need any previous qualifications?
No. The courses are suitable for everyone, regardless of education, occupation, race, political or religious belief. The course is not religious, but it does address the spirit in mankind.
Will I get a certificate or qualification?
These are not academic courses. They are practical rather than theoretical. There are no exams.
How much does it cost?
In New York City, the cost is $175 for the 10 sessions with a price of $85 for full-time students. If claiming a student discount, you will need to register in-person with your student-id. Check the Locations/Register page for details on other locations.
Are there any trial sessions?
No, you need to enroll for the full ten week course. A student in the introductory course whose written request to withdraw is received within the first week of class will be issued a refund, less a 20% non-refundable registration fee. Refunds will be made within 45 days of receipt of the written request. If for personal reasons you are unable to complete the course after a few sessions, you are entitled to a free retake of the whole course in the following term.
How can I enroll?
You can enroll online or for courses offered in New York City by calling 212-744-4848 or by visiting 12 East 79th Street in person on weekdays between 6:30 pm and 9:00 pm. You can also enroll when you arrive for the first session in Week 1 (in this case it is best to arrive a little early, as others may also be enrolling at the same time). If you enroll online, you will receive an email confirming your registration. Please bring a copy of this email with you when you attend your first session as proof of payment. If you enroll before the first session by any means other than online enrollment, you will receive a receipt. Please bring this with you when you attend your first session as proof of payment.
What about further studies?
On completing the Philosophy Works course, some students want to continue their studies, while others find that this introduction to the subject sufficiently satisfies their interest. For those wishing to continue, the School offers regular Autumn, Winter and Spring courses and, after a while, the practice of meditation. All are most welcome. Whether you stay for one term or many, the hope is that everyone will find something of real value to them.
